Has ChatGPT Passed the Turing Test?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transitioned from science fiction to everyday life, bringing about unprecedented transformations to the world. From self-driving cars on the streets to smart assistants answering questions at home, AI applications are ubiquitous. Chatbot ChatGPT has further enhanced work efficiency, created new job opportunities, and fostered innovation in various fields such as healthcare, finance, and education.

In a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-4, successfully made it difficult for participants to distinguish between a machine and a human in a blind test. The study revealed that in 54% of cases, participants mistook GPT-4 for a human, suggesting that GPT-4 has likely passed the Turing Test.

The researchers at the University of California, San Diego recently published a paper titled “Inability of People to Distinguish GPT-4 from Humans in the Turing Test,” in which approximately 500 individuals interacted unknowingly with both humans and the AI model to determine if they could discern the difference between them.

The results of the experiment were surprising, as humans had a probability of approximately 54% of misidentifying GPT-4 as a “human.” In other words, in over half of the cases, humans were unable to successfully recognize whether they were conversing with AI or humans.

The Turing Test, proposed by British mathematician Alan Turing in 1950, is primarily used to assess whether AI can imitate humans to an extent where humans cannot distinguish between the two. Although the Turing Test has faced some criticism, it remains one of the objective methods currently employed to test AI capabilities.

With GPT-4 passing the Turing Test, OpenAI has also announced the upcoming release of GPT-4o and has reached agreements with companies such as Apple and AI-focused Worldcoin (WLD) tokens.

Although most AI tokens on the market are not directly associated with OpenAI or Google’s AI model, Gemini, the market has shown optimism regarding the prospects of GPT-4. Within just 24 hours, the global market capitalization of digital currencies like Fetch (FET), The Graph (GRT), Bittensor (TAO), Akash Network (AKT), and SingularityNET (AGIX) experienced double-digit growth.

What does Vitalik Buterin think about AI development?

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, also expressed excitement about this achievement. The data indicates that AI has reached a level where it is difficult to distinguish between humans and machines, stating that “it’s basically like flipping a coin” to determine if it is a human or a robot.

Vitalik further explained that in the experiment, humans were identified correctly 66% of the time, while the robot was mistaken for a human 54% of the time. He emphasized that in the real world, a 12% difference is relatively small, so in a sense, GPT-4 can be considered a pass.

The comments below the article also showed excitement about this achievement. Some users pointed out that in the post-AI era, the real concern is not whether robots can pass tests like humans but rather if humans can be recognized as real humans during these tests.

However, it is not necessarily conclusive that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and the Turing Test are directly related. The Turing Test lacks a standard or technical foundation for measuring whether machines can “think” like biological beings, and there is currently no scientific consensus on this matter.

In simple terms, the “thinking” ability of AGI cannot be measured or defined by the scientific or engineering community at present. Nevertheless, the performance of GPT-4 is undeniably impressive, and it holds promise for the future development of AI.
