The ChatGPT 4o model has significantly upgraded image generation capabilities, leading many individuals to share “realistic” fake receipts created by AI on social media platforms. However, upon closer examination, there are still errors in number formatting and totals.
While AI image generation capabilities have greatly improved, they have also benefited fraudsters. Scammers may exploit these fake receipts for reimbursements, tax deductions, or to deceive crowdfunding platforms.
Can the ChatGPT 4o Model Generate Fake Receipts?
According to a report by TechCrunch, OpenAI’s latest ChatGPT 4o model has enhanced the ability to generate images, particularly the presentation of “text” within images. This technology enables users to create extremely realistic “fake receipts” through simple text prompts.
For example, venture capitalist Deedy Das from Menlo Ventures shared a receipt from a well-known steakhouse on social media platform X, indicating that it was generated using ChatGPT 4o. Additionally, TechCrunch found even more realistic examples on LinkedIn, where a user generated a receipt from a local French chain restaurant, featuring natural creases that closely resemble standard paper.

However, TechCrunch pointed out that even though the fake receipts appear very realistic, there are still some obvious errors upon closer inspection, such as incorrect number formatting or incorrect totals. For someone intent on committing fraud, they could still use editing software to modify erroneous numbers or formats, or use more precise instructions to have the AI generate a more perfect result.
Concerns About AI-Driven Fraud
The significant enhancement of AI image generation capabilities allows users to easily create counterfeit receipts. On the other hand, it also benefits fraudsters, as being “proficient in Photoshop” has become increasingly unnecessary; almost anyone with basic operational skills can generate highly realistic documents.
What dangers do fake receipts pose? Fraudsters may exploit these fake receipts for reimbursements, tax deductions, or deceive crowdfunding platforms with false purchase records. Furthermore, many online systems that rely on receipts as proof may also become targets of attack.
However, regarding expense reimbursements, Taiwanese companies usually require related expenditures to be linked to a business registration number. Although images can be fabricated, it is still possible to verify whether the payment exists through the business registration number.
According to TechCrunch, OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson stated that all images generated by ChatGPT will contain metadata, clearly marking them as AI-generated. When users violate usage policies, the company will take action. However, when asked why generating fake receipts is allowed, Christianson stated that OpenAI’s goal is to provide maximum creative freedom, and generating fake receipts can serve as a teaching tool or for creative and advertising design in certain situations.
